Vehicle engines are precision machinery; the movement of many parts must be synchronized carefully to make the engine perform properly. Intake and exhaust valves are critical components for optimum engine performance. These valves contain mechanisms that must be adjusted correctly to allow for changes in temperature. A high-speed bypass (also known as a "high-speed lean-out") is simply another check valve in a mechanical injection system. It opens and bleeds off fuel to the return circuit at the top end of the RPM range, thereby reducing fuel entering the engine and leaning the air/fuel ratio (AFR).

The intake valve opens 10° before TDC for both low-speed engine and high-speed engine. As piston moves away from the cylinder head, the engine draws fresh charge into cylinder. When the piston reaches the BDC (Bottom Dead Centre) and ascent again during the compression stroke, the inertia of the flowing air-fuel mixture tends to continue the.   Mechanical fuel injection works with a simple throttle-controlled air valve and a fuel pump, usually running at one-half engine speed.
