The novel invites discussions of character struggles, heroes, and allegory, and opens up even more when students have background knowledge of post.

Our Twisted Hero. This deceptively innocent tale of psychological warfare between two elementary school students is the brief but forceful U.S. debut of Korea's most popular fiction writer. When year-old Han Pyongt'ae moves to a small town from Seoul to begin fifth grade, he expects his cosmopolitan education will impress everyone.

Our Twisted Hero is Yi Munyol's first book ever to be published in North America. With its classically unadorned style and disturbing insights, it will astound readers.

OUR TWISTED HERO is Munyol's first book ever to be published in North America and it will certainly interest new readers to his work. Han Pyongt'ae is a year-old boy and the narrator of the story.

He's had to move from the glories of Seoul to a small provincial town. When looking at the book Our Twisted Hero, by Yi Munyol, he presents a number of different characters within a classroom setting to be a twisted hero.

Within the story the twisted hero is the 6th grade teacher, who broke up Om’s rule over the class. When the twelve-year-old narrator of Our Twisted Hero moves to a small town and enrolls in the local school, he’s confident that his big city sophistication will establish him as a natural leader.

He is shocked to find his new classmates and teacher under the spell of the class monitor. As the narrator sets out to overthrow the bully, he is threatened, teased–and finally broken.

Our Twisted Hero is clearly an allegory for Korean politics, for the transition from an arguably benevolent but totalitarian regime to an uncertain democracy. It is never didactic or clumsy, however, and it works as a story of a child at school, without any political background.

The classroom dynamics might feel overplayed and seen in an array of other coming-of-age films, but Our Twisted Hero is particularly exceptional in evoking sympathy for characters on both sides of the hierarchical struggle.

At first, the lines seem to be binary in a typical “good vs. evil” battle between a newcomer and feared leader/5().
